I took a class on Soviet Science Fiction in college (mostly involving literature). I would say Russian sci-fi is pretty solid. Anyway, I would recommend:
Red Star by Alexander Bogdanov: Technically a utopian novel, but featuring a utopia with problems. It's set during the (failed) Revolution of 1905 and was written before the (successful) Revolution of 1917. It's interesting from a historical perspective.
